Historic win for Co Cavan away to PSNI

Co Cavan RFC First XV made history on the road last Saturday when they recorded the club's first ever win over PSNI in Belfast. Cavan made a number of changes for the match and their bold selection policy paid off, as they raced into a commanding half-time lead with three early tries and held on bravely in the second half, despite losing captain Robbie Beattie and centre Salesi Tu'ipolotu to the sin bin in the final quarter. With newcomers Gary Gillespie and Ciaran Crowe impressing on their senior debuts, Cavan tore into their opponents from the off and tries from Tu'ipolotu, Brian McCusker and Neil McCann, and three well-taken kicks from full-back Gareth Corrigan, opened a strong half-time lead. "We're delighted with the win, I'm very proud of the lads," said player-coach Tumaile Tasola. "However, there's a long way still to go this season. The new players all performed very well, our new outhalf was excellent and Paul McCusker gave a Man of the Match performance up front." CAVAN: Gary Gillespie, Paul McCusker, Gerry Mulligan, Martin O'Reilly, Jonathan Jackson, Alistair Trenier, Robbie Beattie (c), Tumaile Tasola, Steven Ivers, Ciaran Crowe, Salesi Tuiplotu, Lorcan Mulvey, Paul McCusker, Neil McCann, Gareth Corrigan.
