€4500 to be won in Bailieborough this Christmas

Shops and Businesses in Bailieborough are rewarding their customers for shopping locally this Christmas. 45 shops and businesses are each holding a draw on 21st of December for a §100 voucher. Entry to the Draw is Free and tickets are available in all participating shops from this week onwards.

The last few years have seen many changes in Bailieborough, some business change hands and many new small business established from opticians, boutiques, a laundry shop, a health food shop, gift shops and in more recent times a new foreign food shop on Barrack Street to cater for the many foreign nationalities living among us. It is great to see the town growing and providing the community with much needed services especially with so much competition from the many sprawling retail parks across the country who provide homes to many multinational stores whose main concern is providing shareholders with bigger profits each year. Money spent in the local town helps provide local employment so please support your local town this Christmas and good luck in free Christmas Draws.

International Artists Rock Bailieborough

Following on from the success of last year's Platform 1 local curator Niamh Smyth's latest endeavour to bring exciting contemporary art to a peripheral area is Platform 2. The show successfully opened on the 10th of November at Knockbride House, Bailieborough Co Cavan. It features the works of fourteen different artists brought together to provide a venue and a platform for the expansion and knowledge of contemporary art in the area.

The exhibition also seeks to question the notion of a sense of place and community. Within the intricacies of the individual works Smyth has set up an arena for looking into how we relate to our locality and whether we are too eager to throw away facets of community life such as trust and looking out for your neighbour in favour of a society where the individual comes before the community. The changing face of commerce in small rural communities is also under question with the rush towards convenience shopping brought about by people's desire for more variety and better value on the one hand, and time pressures on the other.

This promises to be an interesting and challenging show with artists given free reign to interpret the notions of displacement and replacement in relation to Bailieborough and its environs. The invited artists showing are: Shane Cullen IRL, Alan Phelan IRL, Ursula Burke NI, Paddy Bloomer NI, Nina Tanis USA, Paul McAree IRL, Fiona Dowling IRL,  Mary McIntyre NI, Simon McWilliams NI,  Carole Lung USA, Áine Ivers IRL, Seamus Nolan IRL and FrenchMottershead UK.

The exhibition remains open to the public until 24th November. Opening times are 11am-6pm and it is closed Mondays.
