Cootehill captain Joshua Hayes celebrates with the spoils of war today in Ballyconnell.

Cootehill are ACFL Division 2 champions

It was a busy weekend on the playing fields for Cavan teams, at home and abroad, and the big news is that Cootehill Celtic have ended a 24-year famine by picking up the ACFL Division 2 title. The Celtics defeated Drumlane by 2-8 to 0-11 in the final in Ballyconnell, thanks in large part to first-half goals from Stevie O'Connor and Cathal McCabe. Meanwhile, Lacken finished with 12 men in their four-point defeat to Monaghan champions Doohamlet in the Ulster Club IFC at Ballybay. The Cavan champions lost powerful full-back Trevor Crowe to a shoulder injury in the first ten minutes and never really recovered. Bailieborough Shamrocks rounded off a good fortnight for them last night when they secured their intermediate status, beating Butlersbridge - who welcomed Lorcan Mulvey back into the ranks - by 0-7 to 0-6 in a tense encounter on the 3G pitch. Junior champions Laragh United advanced to the last four of their Ulster Club competiton when they trounced Drum of Derry by 0-17 to 1-2, although Crosserlough camogs were out of luck as they lost by 1-11 to 0-4 against London champions Tara in Ruislip in the All Ireland club quarter-final. Finally, there was a bizarre in the Reserve ACFL Division 2 as Crosserlough and Bailieborough shared just two points between them over the hour in what surely must be the lowest-scoring competitive game of the season in this county.
