Suspicious device call made from Belturbet

A family home in a South Fermanagh village had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning (March 27), following the discovery of a suspicious device.
The device was located in a area known as Clough - a small village just two kilometres south of Roslea.
It is the second time in less than a week that security on both sides of the border have been placed on high alert, following the discovery of an abandoned bomb outside nearby Derrylin last week.
It is understood that a phone call was made from the telephone kiosk on The Diamond in Belturbet to the PSNI on Tuesday night (March 26). The PSNI traced the number back to the kiosk and they alerted the gardaí. The kiosk has been sealed off pending technical examination.
Superintendent Noel Cunningham from Monaghan Garda Station, who is heading up the investigation on this side of the border, confirmed that a suspicious device had been discovered in the village, which is right on the border.
The road has been closed to traffic and diversions are in place. Members of the Enniskillen PSNI are currently at the scene. The two southern access routes to Clough are closed at Innishammon Cross and the Smithborough-to-Clones approach road to Clough is also closed.
According to PSNI sources the device is close to Clough Church of Ireland and Army technical officers have been tasked to the scene.
The alert comes just days after a 60 kilogram bomb was discovered in an abandoned vehicle in Derrylin. It is understood that the intended target of that device was the PSNI police station in Lisnaskea, again not far from Roslea.
Supt Cunningham said: “We have to be aware of what is going on and these dissidents are intent of stirring things up. They have been active in recent times.”
With the G8 summit due to take place at the Lough Erne Resort outside Enniskillen this June, Supt Cunningham stated secuity on both sides had to be “extra vigilant”.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were in Belturbet on Tuesday night between 9pm-1am and who may have seen a suspicious car or anyone in the kiosk between those times to come forward.
They will be examining CCTV footage from a number of premises in the town to see if they can establish the make of car and how many individuals were involved.
