Council's essential services to be maintained

The Council has moved to re-assure the people of Cavan that the local authority has a business continuity plan in place, which ensures that essential services will remain open as the current public health situation surrounding COVID-19 develops.

Management says the Council will continue to monitor the situation, and co-ordinate with national and local stakeholders to determine the “appropriate response as the situation progresses”.

In order to help stop the spread of coronavirus, the Council has however closed all public offices, including Courthouse Cavan, Johnston Central Library, and Municipal District offices, until March 29.

All library branches, the Ramor Theatre, Cavan Town Hall Arts Centre, Cavan County Museum, and Cavan Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool will also close during this time.

Any indoor gatherings comprising 100 people or more, and outdoor events of 500 people or more have also been cancelled.

Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Tommy Ryan said: “The closing of public offices is an important element in implementing the social distancing measures that will help arrest the spread of this virus. We want to assure the public that we will endeavour to maintain a high level of service during this time and I encourage members of the public to contact us by phone, email, or social media with any queries they may have.”

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Shane P O’Reilly, added hat the safety of the public was of paramount concern to the local authority.

This is an unprecedented situation and it is important to take appropriate measures to minimise the spread of this infection. I would like to encourage the people of Cavan to heed the advice of the health authorities and stay at home where possible, keep washing hands and to minimise social contact.

On behalf of Cavan County Council, I would also like to pay tribute to all the frontline staff here in the local authority and throughout the emergency and health services, for their dedication to date and in the days and weeks to come,” stated Cllr O’Reilly.

During this time payments and general queries can be conducted via email at info@cavancoco.ie or by phone on 049-4378300.

The council’s out-of-hours emergency number is 087-6118116. Issues with water supply can be directed to Irish Water’s helpline on 1850-278278.
