Gardaí release four in murder investigation

William (34) and his 21-year-old Latvian girlfriend Anastasija's disappearance is believed to be connected with the operations of a criminal gang with links in Dublin, Meath and Louth, as well as Cavan.

Gardaí investigating the murder of William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavanne have released four people arrested for questioning in relation to the couple's disappearance.

William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavanne disappeared without trace from their home in Gormanston, Co Meath, on April 14, 2015.

In September 2016, the case was reclassified as a murder investigation.

Earlier this week Gardaí arrested three men and one woman (40s) as part of their investigation. They were all released last night, Thursday, July 10, without charge.

A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the matter.

William (34) and his 21-year-old Latvian girlfriend Anastasija's disappearance is believed to be connected with the operations of a criminal gang with links in Dublin, Meath and Louth, as well as Cavan.

The violent gang are also believed to have been involved in the murder or disappearance of several others, including the killing of Benny Whitehouse in Balbriggan.

Gardaí believe William and Anastasija were murdered, but to date their remains have never been found.

In 2018, Gardaí sub-aqua units scanned the flooded Mells Quarry in Co Louth searching for William and Anastasija's missing bodies.

Along with searches for the bodies carried out at the time, Gardaí further assisted the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) in raiding a number of premises in Drogheda, North Dublin, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan.

The latest arrests bring to five the number of people questioned in relation to the couple's disappearance.

Back in April this year, a man aged in his 50s was also arrested as part of the investigation into the suspected murder of the missing couple.

The male, originally from the UK but living in Co Meath, was also questioned in connection with the discovery of firearms in Gormanstown, Co Meath, in January of this year and the discovery of a large quantity of ammunition last year.
