Fire Service tribute to road traffic victims

Almost 25,000 people have been killed on Irish roads since records began in 1959.

Fire Services crews at stations across Cavan will this evening shine their lights in collective remembrance of all those who have sadly lost their lives on the nation’s roads.

The event, at 7pm, is in honour of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims- Sunday, November 15.

Almost 25,000 people have been killed on Irish roads since records began in 1959.

In February, two people died following a fatal road traffic collision in Ballinagh, Co Cavan.

To date in 2020, there have been 127 road deaths in Ireland, 27 of which were pedestrians, 50 were drivers, 23 were passengers, 17 involved motorcycles, and 10 were bike users.

Last year road deaths increased by nearly 30% in 2019.

Of the 34 people who lost their lives in fatal road traffic collisions, 25 were drivers or passengers.

Analysis from 2018 reveals that nearly 1 in 3 of vehicular fatalities had no safety belts on at the time of the collision.
