A Heritage Podcast for Cavan!

'Where We Belong', the new Cavan Heritage Podcast, was an initiative undertaken by the Heritage Office during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Its inspiration was to encourage people in lockdown to explore all aspects of heritage in their immediate locality.

Cavan County Council’s Heritage Officer Anne Marie Ward said: “The five-kilometre rule provided an opportunity for people to get out and rediscover their own environment and perhaps see it with fresh eyes. We wanted to encourage people to tap into the rich heritage of the county - be it the landscape, the culture, or the built heritage. There’s so much there for people to enjoy and it’s proven to be a real outlet for people during this difficult time.”

The new podcast series is a continuation of the project. The fact it is streaming globally will mean that both locals and those far away can spend some quality time with Cavan through the world of sound.

‘Where We Belong’ will feature weekly episodes focusing on different elements of Cavan’s Heritage.

To celebrate the launch, two episodes will be released on Saturday, May 22. The first episode is inspired by the ecological heritage of the county and includes a beautiful new recording of the Dawn Chorus bird song captured in a Cavan woodland. It will be narrated by ornithologist Heather Bothwell and features poetry from the renowned Heather Brett. The second offering provides a sneak peek behind the doors of Cavan County Museum with its curator Savina Donohoe.

Anne Marie shared some upcoming highlights of future episodes including chats with artist Jackie O’Neill, explorations of Cavan architecture with David Cullivan, and an insightful tour around Corravahan House.

The series is directed and produced by Alan Bradley.

It truly is one not to be missed. The podcast launches Saturday, May 22, and will be available on all streaming platforms including Apple Podcasts & Spotify.
