‘It’s a mighty relief’ - hotelier

The enthusiasm of Arva hotelier Eamonn Gray was palpable when we spoke to him this week ahead of opening of the Breffni Arms today (Wednesday) for business.

The news from the Taoiseach was a “mighty relief”, according to the proprietor of the Breffni Arms who has put facilities in place to cater for outdoor dining, which will seat 60 people comfortably.

Mr Gray already has gazebos in place to ensure that people can enjoy their open-air dining experience whether the sun is shining or conditions are showery.

“I have another part of the open air area that is totally covered and we also have heating facilities in place, if required,” he added.

Mr Gray also pointed out that residents of the hotel are allowed to dine indoors from today and, from July 5, general indoor dining will be permitted.

“Things will return to normal on that date,” he said, breathing a sign of relief.

“We retained all our permanent staff and that leaves us comfortably placed to open up for the outdoor dining,” added Mr Gray.

He is optimistic too that British and Continental anglers will return to the area and the hotel after July 19 - the date on which the Government is lifting the ban on non-essential international travel.

“I put up a post on one of the social media channels right after the Taoiseach’s announcement and, within just over 30 seconds, I had over 100 replies. Hundreds of replies have now rolled in and all saying ‘see you in September’ or ‘see you later in the year’,” said a delighted Mr Gray.
