Tributes paid to well known Virginia hotelier

He was well known across the county.

Tributes have been paid to well-known businessman Jimmy Brady who has died.

Jim, Proprietor of the Lakeside Manor Hotel in Virginia, died on Tuesday, October 19.

Originally from Gurteen in Arva, he had served as Chair of the Arva Show in the 1990s.

The Show’s committee paid tribute to him saying he “was instrumental in re-energising our show”.

“He laid the platform for ensuring the future of Arva Show by adding many different facets to show day including the addition of our schools section, which is still in place today”, said the committee.

St Patrick’s GAA CLub in Arva said news of Jim’s passing was received with sadness.

“Jim played at all levels for Arva and was a leading light within the club for many years. He was a member of the Arva team which were defeated by Drumalee in the 1969 Intermediate Championship Final and was a tenacious half back on the team which defeated Ballymachugh in the Intermediate Final of 1972”, said the club in a post on social media.

He continued to be involved in the club after hanging up his boots in roles with the club as secretary and team manager.

Jim died on Tuesday in Cavan General Hospital surrounded by his family.

He’s survived by his wife Méabh, sons Farrell, Conor and Darragh and his extended family.

His funeral will take place tomorrow (Friday) in Mary Immaculate Church, Virginia at 2pm. He will be buried afterwards in Maghera Cemetery.

Members of the public are being invited to form a guard of honour along the Bailieborough road to the Church and to Maghera graveyard.
