Nugent the focus of latest Centenaries lecture

HISTORY ‘Decades of Centenaries’ - Autumn lecture series

A leading unionist and veteran of the Great War - Major General Oliver Nugent - is the focus of tonight's Decade of centenaries lecture.

Nick Perry of the university of Kent gives this evening's talk, titled 'How long shall we be able to remain here': Major General Oliver Nugent in Cavan, 1922.

Nugent, of Mountnugent, was an important figure in the establishment and training of the UVF in County Cavan in the early 20th century. During WWI he led the Ulster Division on the Western Front from 1915-18.

The focus of this talk is on his time in Cavan as a unionist in the newly formed Irish Free State.

This is the fourth in the series of online Autumn lectures presented by Cavan Library Service, in association with Cavan County Council’s Historian-in Residence programme.

The video premiers on Thursday, November 4, at 7.30pm.
