Appeal after elderly man robbed by man impersonating Garda

Gardaí are seeking the public's help after an elderly man was robbed by a man purporting to be a Garda.

The incident happened yesterday morning at around 11.15am in the Cranadillion area of Virginia.

The suspect was approximately 50 years old and of a stocky build with dark hair and a Dublin accent. He was wearing grey trousers and what was described as a fluorescent stab vest.

He produced a realistic looking Garda ID and indicated that money was found nearby by children. He then walked into the elderly man's house and asked him where he kept his money.

He took a substantial sum of money from the victim, including a small amount of sterling and then left the scene on foot.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the area yesterday morning and noticed anything suspicious please contact Bailieborough Station on 042 9694570.
