Elderly Cavan woman scammed by man impersonating Garda

A “substantial sum of money” was taken from an elderly Cavan woman this morning by a man impersonating a Garda.

Local Gardaí have issued a warning to people in the region after the latest such scam incident.

Between 10am and 10.30am this morning, a man called to an elderly woman at her home in the New Inns area of Ballyjamesduff and claimed he was a Garda.

He produced what looked like a Garda ID and was described as “well dressed” with a shirt and tie and was about 6 feet in height.

He claimed there had been a robbery in the area and showed the lady money and asked if it was hers. She went to check her money and the suspect followed her into the house.

He subsequently took a substantial sum of money and left the scene in what is described as a blue car. This car then went in the direction of the N3.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area this morning or was in that area and may have dash cam footage to contact them in Bailieborough Garda Station on 042 9694570.

Gardaí say these criminals always target people who are more vulnerable when carrying out crimes like this.

They have urged people to pass on this message to as many people as possible.

“If cold callers call to your house, never let them in until you have confirmed their identity. Remember to always report suspicious activity/callers to your local Garda Station. IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT.”
