The cream of Irish food and beverage producers once again rose to the top, as Cavan companies won seven awards at this year’s Blas na hÉireann Awards, widely considered to be Ireland’s annual food ‘Oscars’.

The prestigious annual food gathering took place in Dingle from September 29 until October 1 and returned after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

The bronze, silver and gold winners from County Cavan are: Carleton Cakes, Drummully Boxty, Ice Cream Treats, Lakeland Dairies, Manor Farm, Vanilla Bean Patisserie and Liffey Meats, which was also awarded Best in County.

“Making it as a finalist is a huge achievement and one to be very proud of,” said Artie Clifford, chairman and founder of Blas na hÉireann. “The competition ramps up year on year, meaning those producers who are short-listed as finalists really are the crème de la crème of Irish food and drink. This year it was not just the excellent food and drink that has been celebrated but the people themselves, our passionate and resilient producers.”

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Councillor John Paul Feeley hailed the awards success as proof of the quality of Cavan produce.

“The vibrancy of the Cavan food sector is demonstrated with awards being won nationally at Blas na hÉireann. The Blas na hÉireann award attached to local products provides a seal of superior quality celebrating the very best of Irish food and drink. Cavan County Council is proud to support this important sector of our economy.”

Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Tommy Ryan, also congratulated the award winners: “I am delighted to see that Cavan had seven producers winning awards at the Blas na hÉireann National Food Awards this year. This is a credit to the county and allows us to showcase the fantastic array of locally produced food and drink available in Cavan. Congratulations to all of the finalists.”

Marianne McDonald, Food Strategy Co-ordinator, Cavan County Council, said: “Cavan County Council continue to work with Cavan Food Network to promote Cavan as a vibrant foodie destination with a number of exciting projects in progress under the ‘Created in Cavan’ banner. ‘The Created in Cavan brand provides consumer assurance that they are purchasing locally produced food and drink.”

Now in its 15th year, Blas na hÉireann saw a huge increase in entries with almost 3,000 products and many new producers entering the awards for the first time. Products from every county in Ireland were put forward to vie for bronze, silver, or gold awards in over 150 food and drink categories.
