Plans to rehabilitate stretch of Maghera River

Pre-validation sought from Council.

There are plans to rehabilitate and improve an 800-metre stretch of the Maghera River at Magheraboy Upper near Finea.

Pre-validation for the proposal at Maghera Upper, Aughakilmore, was lodged by Inland Fisheries Ireland with the planning section of Cavan County Council.

The planned works will include the removal of some in-stream vegetation, repair and reinstatement of existing in-stream structures.

Improvement and alteration of flow dynamics is also sought by the construction of deflectors and weirs, reinforcement of the river bank in some locations, and the introduction of spawning gravel to improve breeding habitats for trout.

An appropriate assessment and an NIS have been submitted as part of the application, a decision on which is due in early August.
