Welcome for additional sport campus funding

Additional €209,000 awarded to project.

News that Cavan Regional Sports Campus has been allocated additional grant funding of over €209,000 has been welcomed locally.

Fine Gael Minister Heather Humphreys noted that the additional funding for this project and others across the country is being provided, in response to delays experienced by grantees arising from the pandemic and construction inflation.

“I very much welcome the decision to grant an additional €209,000 to this project, which is so important for County Cavan,” Minister Humphreys said. “Investing in our sporting and recreational facilities is so important in terms of supporting our physical and mental well-being so this is great news indeed for the county and those behind this worthy project.”

Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth also welcomed the top-up funding which brings the total investment to date to €1,047,001.

Deputy Smyth said: “I’m delighted that top-up funding of €209,321 has been approved for Cavan Regional Sports Campus. It brings the total funding for the project to over €1m to date.

“This is hugely important funding as it will benefit people of all ages and abilities. Investing in our sports infrastructure is a no-brainer - it not only helps keep people physically fit but it is also vital for nurturing good mental health.

“Fianna Fáil in government is committed to investing in sports campuses across the country the coming years.”

Fine Gael Senator Joe O'Reilly said noted that a new round of the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund will open for applications in the first half of 2024, with the dates, terms and conditions to be published on the Department’s website, in due course.

“For the first time, it will be a requirement for all successful applicants to publish their Similar Access Policies, in respect of men and women having access to the facilities on similar terms, in order to be eligible for a “top-up” allocation drawdown.

“It is so essential that we have top class sporting facilities like this in Cavan so that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy and benefit from their use. We also need these important facilities to train and nurture our next generation of sporting stars in Cavan who may go on to perform in elite sports.

“This Fund provides Exchequer support where the Exchequer investment is larger than the maximum grant available under the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme.
