'High volumes' presenting at Emergency Department in Cavan

Patients urged to source "alternative pathways" of care

The public are being urged not to attend the Emergency Department at Cavan General Hospital unless absolutely necessary.

Hospital management this morning issued a memo to local media and GPs in the region.

It read: 'Please be advised our Emergency Department is currently experiencing high volumes of patients.

'Please note that ED is still available if you need emergency care but we would appreciate your support in using alternative pathways for non-emergency care eg GP, pharmacy, Minor Injuries Unit in Monaghan Hospital.'

The memo was issued in the name of Su-Zann O'Callaghan, general manager of Cavan and Monaghan hospitals.

It also reminds of the MIU's opening hours in Monaghan - seven days a week from 8am to 8pm.

This is the latest in a series of memos issued from hospital management in recent months in relation to pressure on the Emergency Department.

It comes as the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) report there are 16 patients on trolleys this morning at Cavan General Hospital out of 534 nationwide.
