Local students top of their class at Irish Angus Schools competition

Students are challenged to rear five Irish Angus calves over 18 months while completing a research project

Three Co Cavan schools got the opportunity to exhibit their wares at Croke Park during last weekend’s Irish Angus Schools 2024 competition which is run in conjunction with ABP and Kepak.

The competition challenges students to rear five Irish Angus calves over 18 months while completing a research project. The initiative aims to promote the Certified Irish Angus brand while educating students about the care and attention that is required to produce quality beef for consumers.

Meanwhile, Aoibhin Clarke, Blathnaid Smyth and Shauna McLoughlin from Loreto College, Cavan exhibited their heifer last weekend. So too did Mark Lennon, Philip Tierney, Sinéad Carolan and Oisín Monaghan from Coláiste Dun an Rí, Kingscourt while Seán Clinch, Jessica Fitzsimons, Kacey Farrell, and Katie O'Brien from Bailieborough Community College also participated in the event.

Five out of the forty-three exhibiting schools that best demonstrated an understanding of the project along with innovative ideas will be presented with Irish Angus calves at the National Ploughing Championships in September 2024.

Four students from Dunshaughlin Community College in Co Meath were crowned the overall winners of the competition. They undertook a research project that explored a 'holistic approach to improving animal performance'.

They used the Alltech ECO2 assessment tool to predict an outcome for their calves of 8.5kg CO2 per kg beef which is significantly lower than the national average.
