Busy weekend for Cavan Roads Policing Unit

Motorists caught without insurance and driving under the influence of alcohol

Cavan Roads Policing Unit has experienced a busy couple of days over the St Patrick’s bank holiday weekend.

Yesterday, St Patrick’s Day, while performing a mandatory intoxicant testing checkpoint in the Arva area, gardaí stopped a car and spoke to the driver who was having difficulty finding a driving licence.

It was subsequently established that the driver was disqualified. The driver was arrested and the car detained under Section 41 Road Traffic Act.

Later in the evening, gardaí received a report of “erratic driving” while another motorist was arrested in the Cloverhill area on suspicion of drunk driving. The driver was found to be over the legal alcohol limit and has been charged.

Cavan gardaí also discovered a motorist who was driving with no insurance, driving licence, tax or NCT on Saturday. The car was seized and the driver now faces prosecution.

Later, in the Ballyjamesduff area gardaí were flagged down by someone whose car had been involved in a collision.

The other driver failed to remain at the scene but gardaí investigated the matter further and the motorist was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and brought to Cavan Garda Station.The person has since been charged and is before the courts.

And, in Ballyconnell, Cavan Roads Policing Unit conducted speed checks on the approach to the town from Derrylin in the 60km limit. A number of detections were made and fines have been issued.
