Walk with Daire fundraiser

A fundraising walk is being organised for Liverpool fan Daire Gorman to help him travel to France to compete as a member of a wheelchair football team in a special competition this summer.

Gardaí in Cavan, Monaghan and Louth have launched the fundraiser for their honorary garda colleague Daire - one of their Little Blue Heroes. The 5KM walk with Daire will take place in Rossmore Park, Monaghan on Sunday, April 21, at 10am.

Daire hit headlines last year after he was invited to Anfield on a once-in-a lifetime trip. The 12-year-old came to the attention of the world after a video of him, overcome with emotion in the stadium, went viral during the club’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. Following that he was invited back to spend time with outgoing club manager Jurden Klopp and a host of Liverpool stars.

Daire has since been selected as a member of the Belfast Trailblazers Powerchair Football Team who will take part in the Powerchair Football EPFA Champion’s Cup in Paris, from June 16-23.

All team members travelling to France have to pay their own costs and Daire’s garda friends are hoping to raise enough money to send him, his parents Kenny and Shelly and his sister Aoife to Paris for the week and to Disneyland Paris for a few days also.

“After a tough year last year with Daire in daily pain, he needs another two to three operations on his legs this year,” explained organiser Detective Annmaire Larkin.

Any monies left over will go directly to Daire’s family for help with the ongoing costs with his care.

“We want Honorary Garda Daire to know that he’ll never walk alone,” says Det Larkin.
