Cavan comes under a status yellow thunderstorm warning
Weather update from Met Éireann
Five counties, including Cavan, are under a status yellow thunderstorm warning. Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal and Sligo are also impacted.
Met Éireann is warning of heavy showers with scattered thunderstorms. Possible impacts include localised flooding, lightning damage, poor visibility and difficult travel conditions.
The warning took effect at 8am this morning and will remain in place until 5pm later today.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the days says outbreaks of rain and possibly a few embedded thunderstorms will push north over Ireland today. A mix of bright spells and showers will follow from the south later this afternoon and evening but rain will linger in Ulster until nightfall. There is the potential for localised surface flooding. A humid day with maximum temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees with moderate southeast winds.
Plenty of cloud around on Thursday night with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. A humid night with areas of mist and fog in places. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees in moderate southerly winds.
Showery rain will clear to the north early on Friday. It will then be a bright day with a mix of sunshine and scattered showers. A few heavy or thundery downpours may develop in the south and southwest. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees with moderate southwest breezes.
There'll be a mix of clear spells and showers on Friday night, the showers are likely to be most frequent in the south of the country. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with light easterly or variable winds.
On Saturday, there'll be a mix of sunny spells and showers. Some of the showers will be heavy and prolonged with the chance of a few thunderstorms developing. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in generally light westerly or variable winds.
Early on Saturday night, a weakening band of rain and drizzle will push eastwards over Ireland. It will become largely dry overnight but a few showers will continue in the north and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate westerly winds.
It will be rather cloudy for a time on Sunday with a few light showers spreading from the west. It will become sunnier later in the day. Highest temperatures on Sunday of 15 to 18 degrees in moderate west to southwest winds.
It will be mostly dry on Sunday night with just a few showers in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, coolest in the south and southeast under the clearer skies.
Monday looks set to be a dry day with plenty of sunshine and just scattered cloud. Maximum temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in moderate southwest winds.
Further Outlook: Current indications suggest high pressure will begin to build near Ireland next week bringing plenty of dry weather but there will be some weak rain-bands embedded in the flow.
