Region braced for more wind and rain
Weather warning
Cavan and Monaghan should brace for more wind and rain today, and possibly sleet or snow on higher ground.
The counties are among 17 under a status yellow rain warning along with Leinster, Cork and Tipperary.
Met Éireann has said that rain falling on already saturated ground, combined with high river levels, will lead to flooding in some areas today and into Thursday.
It's also expected to make for difficult travelling conditions amid poor visibility.
The warning came into effect at 11pm last night and will remain in place until 11pm this evening (Wednesday).
"Spring tides over the coming days, combined with strong winds and storm surge, may impede river discharge and increase flood risk in low-lying coastal and estuarine areas, particularly at high tide," said the latest Met Éireann commentary.
Atlantic low pressure continues to drive our weather pattern, and will bring "fairly widespread spells of heavy rain" overnight and today.
The eastern half of the country will see the highest accumulations of rainfall with the rain tending to clear western areas by the early afternoon.
The strongest winds in the east are going to coincide with high tide along the east coast this morning so there is a risk of wave overtopping and coastal flooding of low-lying flood prone areas.
In the northwest, the rain will meet cold air so it may fall as sleet or snow for a time, especially on high ground before transitioning back to rain later in the day. It will be very windy in the west and northwest too.
The trend of wetter than average conditions in the east and south has continued into February with parts of the east experiencing 3 to 4 times the average rainfall amounts that would normally be expected during the first two weeks of February.
Starting off mostly cloudy tomorrow. Scattered showers or more persistent spells of rain will move northeastwards across the country with drier and brighter conditions following from the southwest.
Highest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees, coolest in the north and mildest in the southwest, with moderate to fresh and occasionally strong northwest winds spreading from the southwest, but staying mainly light to moderate and variable in the northeast.
Becoming cloudy overnight on Thursday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading eastwards across the country. Lows of 2 to 6 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds freshening through the night.
Continuing unsettled this weekend with spells of wet and breezy weather. Turning milder than average for the time of year.
