Man given life sentence for murder of mother

A man has been jailed for six years for the attempted murder of his father and a consecutive life term for the killing of his mother at their West Cavan home last year.

Danny Heyneman (33) appeared before Mr Justice Tony Hunt at Dublin's Criminal Courts of Justice today (Tuesday, June 2) where he was sentenced for the murder of his mother, Annie Heyneman, and the attempted murder of his father, Henk, at Kilnavart, Ballyconnell, on January 11, 2025.

The court heard last month that Heyneman, one of five children, had a long history of depression, self-harm, alcohol misuse and psychiatric admissions. In the years before the attack, his behaviour became increasingly paranoid. He believed phones and laptops were monitoring him, wrapped devices in tinfoil, stored some in lead-lined containers and asked to be removed from the family WhatsApp group.

Family members described him as “always drinking”.

Heyneman's parents had also begun locking their bedroom door at night because they had grown increasingly fearful of their eldest son’s erratic behaviour. Relatives had discussed asking him to leave, but the defendant's mother, Annie worried about what might happen if they forced him out.

On the evening of the attack, Heyneman's parents Annie and Henk returned home after dining out in Cavan Town and found their son with “drink on him”. Henk went to bed shortly after 9pm but was disturbed by “strange noises” followed by a “scream”.

When he entered the kitchen-living area, he found his wife lying on the floor. As he rushed towards her asking, “Honey, are you okay?”, his son turned a near-30cm kitchen knife on him.

Henk later described his son’s eyes as “massive” as he stabbed, and attempted to stab, him repeatedly. After retreating to a bedroom and later escaping through a side door. Despite catastrophic injuries Henk crossed a field barefoot to raise the alarm. Neighbours described him arriving to their door covered in blood, with one ear “hanging off”.

He warned them: “Don’t let anyone near the house without the guards. Danny has gone crazy.”

Armed Support Unit members arrived to the Heyneman home shortly after 10pm to find smoke billowing. Gardaí discovered Annie lying face down with multiple stab wounds. She was still conscious, but despite efforts by emergency services to revive her, the 55-year-old was pronounced dead at 11.08pm.

State Pathologist Professor Linda Mulligan said Annie suffered at least 14 stab wounds to her upper body and neck, including defensive injuries. One wound caused fatal blood loss.

Henk meanwhile sustained 26 sharp-force injuries to his head, face, neck, chest and abdomen, as well as a complex fracture around his left eye. He continues to suffer anxiety, sleep difficulties and ongoing physical complications.

“Every time I blink, every time I try to sleep, I am brought back there,” he told the court.

In his victim impact statement, Henk described life since the killing as “a living nightmare”.

“I am alone now. We should have grown old together,” he said of life without his wife of 33 years.

The couple’s children meanwhile described their mother as “the heart of the family”, recalling her plans for trips to Galway and Australia and to begin singing lessons later that month. They said their home would forever remain tainted as a “crime scene”.

“We are not the same people we once were,” they said, emphasising how difficult the level of media intrusion following tragedy was for them.

Psychiatric experts concluded that although Heyneman suffered from chronic mental health difficulties exacerbated by alcohol and polysubstance abuse, he was not suffering from a severe mental disorder at the time of the killing.

In a letter read to the court, Heyneman apologised to his family.

“I miss you all. I am sorry for my actions. I understand I had a loving and supportive family who did their best for me and tried to get me help. Sorry. I'm sorry.”

The sentence has been backdated to when the defendant first went into custody.
