Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD met this week to discuss a range of issues including Grace’s Law, An Garda Síochána enforcement actions, and wider road safety measures.

During the meeting on Thursday June 4, Commissioner Kelly welcomed the introduction of the new regulations and outlined An Garda Síochána’s approach to enforcement. He also highlighted a significant increase in the number of scramblers and similar vehicles, including quad bikes, seized in recent months, and noted that additional technologies and enforcement options are being explored to strengthen Garda operations.

Minister O’Brien said the regulations, known as Grace’s Law in memory of Grace Lynch, were introduced to address the dangerous driving of scramblers and to prohibit their use in public places.

The meeting also examined measures to further strengthen sanctions against owners of seized scramblers. Minister O’Brien committed to considering any requests from An Garda Síochána that require amendments to the Road Traffic Acts to improve the effectiveness of enforcement measures.
