111 families displaced in Q1 2026

77 evictions recorded in just the first three months of 2026

The housing crisis in Cavan is still impacting people's lives, with local Senator Pauline Tully revealing that a staggering 111 families have already presented as homeless this year.

Senator Tully sounded the alarm on what she describes as a “very concerning” situation, highlighting that 77 evictions were recorded in just the first three months of 2026. Families, couples, and single individuals alike are now facing the grim reality of life without a roof over their heads.

“In my county, there are virtually no affordable rental properties, and the ones that are available are astronomically priced,” Senator Tully said. “People are being pushed out of their homes, and our community is paying the price.”

The Cavan senator did not hold back in placing blame for the crisis. “Fianna Fáil crashed the economy in 2008 and halted house-building completely, showing no foresight. They allowed skilled construction workers to leave the country, and now the consequences are catastrophic.”

According to Senator Tully, over 17,000 people are currently in homeless accommodation across Ireland, including 5,000 children- a humanitarian crisis she warns is spiralling out of control.

With eviction rates climbing and rental options dwindling, Senator Tully called for immediate government action, urging policymakers to confront what she described as “one of the most urgent social crises of our time.”
