Despite the cruel result, Co Cavan RFC 1st XV will look to the future with optimism after an excellent performance against Unviersity of Ulster.

The game represented the club's first home league match of the season, and a number of players made their debuts at this grade in front of a good attendance in Swellan Park.

The match started brightly with the home side exerting pressure on the visitors and having the majority of possession in the first half. The Cavan pack dominated the scrums in the first half and the forwards in general put in a great shift. Unanswered tries by Andrew Elliott and Karl Heaslip meant that Cavan went in at halftime 12-0 in the lead.

As the second half resumed it appeared that the visitors awoke. It was Ulster University RFC that scored soon after the break.

There was some excellent play by the home side, in particular by a very young backline. Cavan’s third try came from a steal off a Ulster University lineout around the halfway line by Lloyd Hastings. The ball transferred to Lachlan Maguire, he made good ground before being tackled, Hamish Vickerman then gathered the ball and offloaded to Aaron O’Reilly. Aaron scored his first senior try to finish off a really good passage of play by Cavan.

Despite dominating periods of the second half, Cavan Men's Rugby Team were denied victory by the University outfit who snatched the win with the last play of the match.

It was promising run out by this young team and look forward to the season ahead.
