Snow possible as temperatures drop
MET Éireann says sleet and snow is possible in Ulster by the end of this week.
According to the national forecaster, high pressure will continue to dominate over the next seven days bringing plenty of dry weather, while over the same period some frost is expected as temperatures dip, especially during the night.
Met Éireann also advises it will turn colder at the weekend with “sharp to severe frosts developing”.
A look at the weather in for the next week suggests tonight, New Year’s Eve, could be a cold one with lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees with “frost and icy stretches” developing. It will also be rather cloudy.
There will be sunshine and scattered showers in Cavan and Monaghan on New Year’s Day (Thursday) with highest temperatures of 5 to 8 or 9 degrees, while the following day (Friday) “some falls of sleet and snow is possible” in between sunny spells and showers. Highest temperatures on Friday are expected to be between 2 and 6 degrees.
The weekend will remain “very cold” but mostly dry though some wintry showers will occur. Daytime highs will reach just 1 to 5 degrees.
Met Éireann’s further outlook for this region says it will continue cold into early next week.
“While there will still be plenty of dry weather, there will be some wintry showers or falls of rain at times,” according to the Met Éireann forecast.
