It is with regret that we report the following deaths in County Cavan in recent days as recorded on RIP.ie. No deaths have been recorded in Monagahan in the past 24 hours.

Van Werner Cloete

Loch Gowna, Cavan

Van Werner Cloete, Loch Gowna, Co. Cavan. Formerly of Johannesburg, South Africa and Wellington, New Zealand, Rest in peace to a truly remarkable man, larger than life- "Our gentle giant" who passed away suddenly at Cavan General Hospital on Saturday 24th January and is now reunited with his gorgeous mother, Anna Maria, who predeceased him. A devoted and loving husband to Claire, and a proud father to his beautiful daughters; Jayden and Camryn, and his sons; Beau and Quade.

He will be sorely missed by his heartbroken wife and children, his father Alec, his mother-in-law Bridie, his brothers Altus and Alec Junior (Bernadine), his sister Monya, brother-in-law Darragh and his cousin Neil (Sureca) and by his huge network of extended family and friends in Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

Rest in Peace (Rus in Vrede, Veilig in Jesus se arms)

Requiem mass for Van will take place at 2pm on Wed 28th Jan at the Church of the Holy Family Loch Gowna (H12 FT54) followed by private cremation.

Forever loved, forever missed, never forgotten.

Elizabeth Betty Hand

(née Cassidy)

Drumgill, Kingscourt, Meath / Kingscourt, Cavan

Peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Predeceased by her husband Paddy, parents Alice and Owen, brothers Philip and Tony, sister Eilish, brothers in law, nephew and niece. Deeply regretted by her four children, Alice, Martina, Patrick and Eugene, her sister Marion, Tessie, brother Paddy, Eugene and sister in law, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Arriving this Wednesday evening to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kingscourt for 7:00. Funeral mass Thursday at 10am which can be viewed live on the parish webcam here. Burial afterwards in Nobber Cemetery (Co Meath).

Liam Murphy

The Drumlins, Virginia, Cavan / Ballyfermot, Dublin

The death has occurred of Liam Murphy, The Drumlins, Virginia, County Cavan, and formerly Ballyfermot, Dublin 10, unexpectedly at his home.

Predeceased by his parents Sheila and Seamus and his sister Siobhan.

Much loved partner of Ann-Marie and cherished and much loved dad to Gail, Jen and Karen and adored Pappy to Alana, Leon, Georgia and Charlie and much loved Pappy to his great-granddaughter Ayla.

Sadly missed by his partner and his daughters and their mother Maureen, grandchildren, great grandchild, sons-in-law, Eoghan, Cormac and Graham, his brothers and sisters, Catherine, Eamon, Joe, Seamus, Ciaran, Fergal, Sheila, Padraig, Cathal and Marie, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, his friends in Virginia Golf Club and a wide circle of friends.

Reposing at his home, 34 The Drumlins, Virginia, County Cavan, on Wednesday evening from 5.00pm until 7.00pm.

House private at all other times please.

Removal on Thursday morning, arriving at Mary Immaculate Church, Virginia for 11.00am Funeral Mass, followed by cremation in Lakelands Crematorium.

Family flowers only. Donations in lieu to the Irish Heart Foundation.

This is kindly requested due to the residential nature of the area, to avoid obstruction and to help maintain the privacy and dignity of the family home. The death has occurred of Mary Tormey (nee McCahey), Greaghettia, Tunnyduff, Bailieborough. Co. Cavan and formerly Alts, Maghercloone, Carrickmacross. Died Tuesday 27th January 2026, peacefully at Cavan General Hospital after a short illness surrounded by her loving family.

Predeceased by her mother Katie and father James.

Deeply regretted and lovingly missed by her family, husband Michael, sons Oliver, Martin (Rose), Gerard (Sinead) and daughters Teresa and Aisling (Francis). Sadly missed by her brother Pat (Bridie), niece Rosaleen and her adored grandchildren Dylan, Brandon, Aimee, Alana, Kaila, Sara, Adam, Cate, Sophia, Isabelle, Leah, Michael, Sasha, Abbie and Ryan, extended family, neighbours and many friends.

May She Rest in Eternal Peace.

Reposing at Clarke's Funeral Home Bailieborough this Tuesday Evening 27th January from 5pm-8pm. Mary will repose at the family home (A82AF57) tomorrow evening Wednesday from 5pm-8pm. Removal from her residence Thursday Morning 29th January, arriving at St. Brigid's Church Knockbride West (A82W271) for Funeral Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
