Cold day with isolated thunder storms

Wintry showers early this morning of rain, hail, sleet and some snow on high ground. Today will be cold and breezy with bright or sunny spells and occasional showers of rain or hail. Isolated thunderstorms are possible. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees, with moderate to fresh, gusty westerly winds.

Tonight, showers will be less frequent, becoming largely confined to Atlantic coastal counties with clear spells developing. It will become cold with frost and some mist or fog patches as westerly winds decrease light. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees.

Saturday will start off mainly dry with bright or sunny spells, the best of these in the east. Scattered showers will extend eastwards through the morning. They'll continue through the afternoon and will gradually die out in the evening. Cloud will increase in the west. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with light to moderate west to southwest breezes.

Saturday night will be mostly cloudy with rain and drizzle spreading eastwards. Clear spells and scattered showers will follow from the west overnight. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with moderate southerly winds veering fresh and gusty westerly as rain clears.

On Sunday morning, any remaining rain in the east will clear. It will be a cool, breezy day with sunny spells and scattered blustery showers, some turning wintry with a chance of hail or sleet, mainly in the north. Afternoon highs of 5 to 10 degrees in fresh to strong westerly winds. On Sunday night, showers will gradually ease, becoming largely confined to Ulster with skies clearing elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty westerly winds.

Monday will start off dry in many areas. Cloud will soon thicken with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading from the Atlantic. It'll become breezy too with fresh to strong south to southwest winds developing in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees. Monday night will be breezy and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with fresh, gusty southerly winds.

Tuesday, St Patrick's Day will be mostly cloudy with some patchy rain or drizzle in places. The best of any bright intervals will be in the east. More persistent rain will develop in the west in the morning and will spread eastwards through the day. It will be mild and breezy with fresh southerly winds and highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees. On Tuesday night, there'll be some lingering rain or drizzle along with drier periods. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with winds falling mostly light.

Wednesday will be dry in many areas. However, there will be some lingering patchy rain or drizzle in places. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with light breezes.

Further outlook: At the moment, it looks like Thursday and Friday next will be mainly dry with sunny spells and light winds and with temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.
