Council ‘pauses’ use of X
Cavan County Council has confirmed it has “indefinitely” abandoned Twitter/X, citing child safety risks, data privacy threats, and mounting ethical concerns.
The decision comes as controversy surrounds the social network over the spread of often shocking ‘deepfake’ content.
“Cavan County Council has indefinitely paused its use of Twitter/X due to child protection, data protection, and ethical concerns in light of the continued production of offensive 'deepfake' imagery on the network,” said a spokesperson.
But the local authority informs that residents can still connect via other social media networks.
“Cavan County Council maintains an active social media presence on Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, and LinkedIn, in addition to a dedicated WhatsApp channel, all of which enable members of the public to stay informed with regard to news and updates from the council. Individuals do not wish to join another social media network can access the council's social media feed without logging in at www.cavancoco.ie/socialmedia.”
