Heat warning as Cavan and Monaghan bask in soaring temperatures

Weather update from Met Éireann

A Status Yellow high temperature warning remains in place for Cavan as the current spell of hot summer weather continues, with temperatures expected to climb close to 30°C before cooler conditions gradually return over the weekend.

Met Éireann's warning, which is valid until 6am on Friday, highlights the risk of maximum temperatures exceeding 27°C alongside overnight temperatures remaining above 15°C, creating uncomfortable conditions, particularly at night.

While the warning applies directly to Cavan, neighbouring Monaghan is also set to experience another exceptionally warm day, with temperatures well into the mid to high twenties expected across much of the county.

Forecasters say Thursday will be the hottest day of the week, bringing widespread sunshine and largely dry conditions. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach between 24°C and 29°C, with isolated locations potentially touching **30°C**, making inland parts of Cavan and Monaghan among the warmest areas in the country.

Only a slight chance of an isolated afternoon shower is expected, mainly in western districts, while light north-easterly or variable winds will do little to ease the heat.

Tonight will remain warm, with overnight temperatures holding between 12°C and 16°C under largely clear skies. Some mist or patchy fog may develop before dawn.

The prolonged warmth has prompted Met Éireann to warn of several potential impacts, including heat stress, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, an increased risk of forest fires and drought**, along with water safety concerns as more people head to lakes, rivers and beaches to cool off.

Conditions will begin to ease on Friday as slightly cooler air filters south. Although it will remain dry, Cavan and Monaghan can expect more cloud at times, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 24°C, cooler than recent days but still pleasant for mid-July.

Looking ahead, high pressure will continue to dominate, bringing a largely settled spell through the weekend and into next week. Saturday and Sunday are expected to stay dry with sunny spells, although Ulster, including Cavan and Monaghan, will generally be cooler than southern counties, with daytime highs of 16°C to 21°C.

The mainly dry pattern is expected to continue into next week, with occasional cloudier periods across the north but little in the way of rainfall. Temperatures across Cavan and Monaghan are forecast to remain in the mid to high teens or low twenties, while southern and eastern parts of the country continue to enjoy warmer conditions.
