Large fish kill in Cavan Town

A large fish kill has occurred at Cavan Town river, with Inland Fisheries Ireland staff currently at the scene.

Trout, roach, minnow and eel can be seen floating along the Cavan River, surrounded by a turquoise green substance in places.

Inland Fisheries Ireland staff are at the scene carrying out tests and identifying the source of the pollution.

One angler who spoke to the Celt from the riverside near Cavan Town bus station said it is "very sad" to see the large number of fish dead in the river.

"It's not nice to see but what is the cause of it? That's what we'd like to find out. Hopefully the fisheries board find out what it is and and sort it out," said Anthony Clail.
