Cavan drowning victim named locally

James Anthony Fanthorpe McHugh, died following an accident in the Annalee River on Tuesday evening, August 11.

A man in his 20s who died following a drowning incident near Ballyhaise, has been named locally as James Anthony Fanthorpe McHugh.

Mr Fanthorpe McHugh, from Antiduff, Ballyhaise, died following an accident in the Annalee River on Tuesday evening, August 11.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of a person in the water at Drumaraw, Ballyhaise, shortly after 8.30pm.

A major emergency response was launched, involving An Garda Síochána, Cavan Town Fire Brigade, the National Ambulance Service, Garda Air Support and a local fire service unit.

Mr Fanthorpe McHugh was recovered from the water and emergency personnel attempted to revive him. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

His body was removed to Cavan Mortuary, with a post-mortem examination to be arranged at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

Mr Fanthorpe McHugh is survived by his parents, Ann Marie McHugh and Desmond Fanthorpe, his sister Majella, brothers Tony and Desmond, daughter Arabella, grandmother Mary Carolan, extended family and friends.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
