Tributes pour in for ‘one of life’s gentlemen’

Tributes have been paid to a man in his 90s who died following a workplace accident at a farm site near the Cavan-Leitrim border.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene at Aughawillian, Garadice, Ballinamore, at approximately 4.40pm after Mr Campbell sustained fatal injuries.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief among his family, neighbours and friends, with those who knew him remembering a much-loved member of the local community.

Online, one tribute described Mr Campbell as “one of life's gentlemen”.

Mr Campbell was predeceased by his beloved wife Rita, his son Thomas and daughter Geraldine.

He is survived by his children Mary (Thompson), Tony, Bosco and Angela (Nugent), as well as his sons-in-law Michael, Ken and Aaron and daughters-in-law Siobhan and Monika, grandchildren Lisa, Kealan, Mark, Conor, Eimear, Nicola, Aisling, Tom, Sean and Catherine, his great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Angela (Brennan) and Kathleen (Gilleece), nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that a file is being prepared for the Coroner’s Court, while enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

Mr Campbell’s body was removed from the scene and taken to the mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

His remains will repose at Smith’s Funeral Home, High Street, Ballinamore, this Thursday, August 13, from 4.30pm until 7pm.

Removal from his home will take place on Friday, August 14, arriving at St Patrick’s Church, Aughawillan, for Funeral Mass at 3pm, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The family has requested that the house remain private.
