Council to honour Cavan surgeon

A Cavan-born surgeon, who has operated medical teams in some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones, is set to receive a major honour in his native county next week.

Cavan County Council is to host a special Cathaoirleach’s Reception for Dr Morgan McMonagle, recognising a remarkable career that has taken the award-winning surgeon to the frontlines of Ukraine, Palestine and Lebanon.

The formal reception will take place on September 14 at Cavan Courthouse.

Dr McMonagle, a consultant vascular and trauma surgeon at University Hospital Waterford, was named the 2025 recipient of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Humanitarian and Community Award for his commitment to protecting lives.

During his humanitarian missions, Morgan has worked in underground shelters and with limited facilities.

The proposal for Cavan’s reception was put forward by Cllr Niamh Brady (FG) at the April council meeting and seconded by Cllr Áine Smith (FF).

It received cross-party support, with Cllr Smith saying: “We should be very proud as a county.”
