Musicians Aoife Flynn (Cavan) and Karen Tracey (Kildare) get a bit of a street seisiún going outside the Guinness brewery, St. James Gate, where the national launch of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2010 took place on Monday

Countdown to the fleadh cheoil in Cavan begins in earnest...

There were 50 days to go until the All Ireland Fleadh kicks off in Cavan, and such a large crowd was in the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin to see its national launch that Senator Labhras Ó Murchú opened his speech by joking "I'm wondering who is looking after Cavan today" and closed by anticipating that at the event on August 16-22 "we will see one of the biggest attendances of all time". After what he described as a "very challenging economic year in Cavan", he suggested that this event, which promises to bring the town its busiest week ever, could be just what it needs. "When you meet a challenge, it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness," said the senator, noting the manner in which Cavan has handled difficulties. "Cavan is going to put its own mark on Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann... endeavouring to put it on an even higher pedestal than it was on before," he said, also expressing his appreciation to Tullamore and its committee, chaired by Attracta Brady, for the past three years' events. Cavan put its own stamp on the launch, the best-attended Senator Ó Murchú had seen, with music and more from local performers. Mid-proceedings, Seamus Fay, who recalls a crowd of some 250 at the last All-Ireland Fleadh in Co. Cavan in 1954 (most of whom travelled on bicycles) was called to the stage and was warmly cheered after he lilted a tune. Formalities were interrupted with comical humour from Cissy, Mick and Granny Annie, who invited all to their 1950's kitchen for a "cupán tae, ceol agus craic". Striking art-works by Mórtas an Chabháin artists, Joey Burns, Sally O'Dowd, Padraig Cahill and Alan James Burns, added some fleadh-themed creativity to the venue. Informative displays from Cavan County Museum's exhibition, Round The House And Mind The Dresser, to be opened this Friday by Donal Lunny, gave a taste of the Cavan music tradition. FEC chairman and Cavan County Manager, Jack Keyes, spoke of the "combined efforts" that will make the Cavan fleadh successful. "We feel in Cavan that there is a uniqueness that we can show the world through the medium of the fleadh," said Mr. Keyes, acknowledging the work of the committee and their chairpersons. Mr. Keyes added that the work of Comhaltas can't be underestimated. "Even through times when it wasn't trendy to be into traditional music, Comhaltas kept the fire lit," commented Mr. Keyes. Without revealing details, he promised that the Fleadh 2010 slogan ("Let Cavan surprise you") is appropriate, as there are "a few surprises in store". Minister Brendan Smith spoke of the forthcoming event as an "ocáid dóchasach... occasion of hope and celebration", paying tribute to all involved with particular mention of musician Antóin Mac Gabhainn, whose performance in his work as an inspector in the Department of Agriculture is as notable as his music. Chairing the launch, PRO Martin Gaffney said this year's is "the widest programme yet of an All-Ireland Fleadh". Sponsors were thanked, as were Mr. Keyes, the fleadh committees and, in particular, Martin Donohoe. Mary McCabe, speaking on behalf of Diageo Ireland, said that given the "phenomenal resurgence of interest in traditional dance, music and culture", she noted, "there has never been a better time for the fleadh". Representing Quinn, John McDonagh, spoke of the company's recent "turbulence" but was happy that, as sponsor, they will "welcome you to Cavan in August". An extensive programme of indoor and outdoor events, including the All-Ireland competitions, concerts, sessions, awards and art and the ever popular street sessions were announced. One of the highlights of Fleadh 2010 will be the All-Ireland Céilí Band Competition, which will take place on the final night, Sunday, August 22, in the Quinndirect Dome. Also The Anglo-Celt will sponsor 'Street Seisiún' a buskers' competition (see page 9 for details). The launch, which featured performances by local musicians including Sin É, enjoyed coverage in national media, including a slot on Ireland AM. Meanwhile the Fleadh Accommodation Office has reported being "very happy with the support of people in relation to accommodation". They are appealing for further support as there will be a huge influx. All who have contacted the accommodation office regarding hosting visitors are assured that "their offer is very much valued and indeed will be taken up". • Contact the Fleadh Accommodation Office, Cavan Chamber of Commerce Office, 49 Church Street, Cavan, at 049-4378541.
