Careless Driving Brian Lynch, Tomaney, Rockcorry, was fined €500 at Virginia District Court on a reduced charge of careless driving when he pleaded guilty to the offence that occurred at Drummallaght, New Inns, Ballyjamesduff, on April 5. Inspector Ray McMahon said gardaí detected the defendant travelling at 142km/h in a 100km zone. He then overtook four or five vehicles on a median strip. Drink driving The following were fined at Virginia District Court for driving with excess alcohol: James Carolan (21), Billis, New Inns, Ballyjamesduff, 59mg/100ml breath, €150 and disqualified for four years; Dermot Martin (25), 15 Ballymacombs Road, Portlenone, Ballymena, Antrim, 45mg/100ml breath, €500 and disqualified for two years and three months from February 1; and Shane O'Reilly, Carrigasimon, Lisduff, Virginia, €150 and disqualified for four years (refused to give sample). No Insurance The following were fined a Virginia District Court for having no insurance on their vehicles: Vytautas Galdikas (21), 1A Brookville, Mullagh, €150; Andrzej Scislo, 18 Oaklands Park, Ballyjamesduff, €500 and disqualified for one year plus €250 for no NCT certificate; Gabriela Bundova, 27 River Crescent, Virginia, €150; Wieslaw Kalodziejczyk, 75 De La Salle Crescent, Ardee, €500 and disqualified for one year; Melissa Kavanagh (26), 16 Borora Crescent, Carlanstown, Kells, €150; Charlie Kane, 6 Yew Trees, Yew Park, Virginia, €300 and disqualified for three years; and Wieslaw Kalodziejczyk, 75 De La Salle Crescent, Ardee, €500 and disqualified for one year. Threatening behaviour A Bailieboro man who had two previous convictions for public order offence was fined €500 at Virginia District Court when he pleaded guilty to using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace at Main Street, Virginia on August 20 last. Inspector Ray McMahon said that Alan Sharkey of Waterloo, Bailieboro, was involved in a physical altercation with another man. When he as asked to leave he became aggressive. Mobile phones The following were fined at Virginia District Court for using mobile phones while driving: Piotr Duda, 18 Riverview, Virginia, €200; and Declan Donohoe, Cootehill Road, Cavan, €150 plus four penalty points. Awarded €6,180 Brian Slowey, hardware Limited, Church Street, Ballyjamesduff, was awarded a decree for €6,180 plus costs at Virginia District Court against T&P Homes Limited and Patrick Brady, Clonkeefy, Ballyjamesduff, for work done and services rendered. Granted decree Dermot Smith t/a Virginia Commercials, Virginia, was granted a decree for €3,379 plus costs at Virginia District Court against Rossa Lighting and Effects Limited, Dublin Road, Virginia, for work done and services rendered. Defendant to pay victim €500 A dispute between two women in a pub on New Year's resulted in one of them appearing before Ballyconnell District Court charged with assault. Marie Reilly, Doon, Ballyconnell, pleaded guilty to assaulting Linda Fitzpatrick in The Forge, Ballyconnell, on January 1. She was ordered to pay €500 compensation to the victim. Superintendent Brian Brunton told the court both ladies were in The Forge and there was a lot of drink involved. The defendant punched Ms. Fitzpatrick in head but there was no cuts or bruising. She had no previous convictions. Mary McAveety, solicitor defending, said it was more a case of pushing and shoving than anything else. Her client was very sorry for what happened and she was pleading guilty. Judge Sean MacBride said if the defendant was willing to pay €500 to the victim, he would apply the Probation Act. Cannabis A young Meath woman who was caught in possession of cannabis in the car park of Loughan House, Blacklion, has been ordered to pay €100 to the Cavan Drug Awareness Centre when she pleaded guilty to the offence at Ballyconnell District Court. Aisling Caffrey of 23 St. Brigids Terrace, Kells, was charged with the offence on April 5 and the estimated street value of the drug was €25.
