Three farms auctioned at average €9 per acre

The expression "safe as houses" mightn't mean a lot these days, but land hasn't been as hard hit, according to Liam Reilly Auctioneer, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan. "Three farms sold by public auction averaged just over €9,000 an acre," is the news in from Mr. Reilly. Circa 3.8 acres of roadside land at Derrin, Ballinagh sold for €61,000; circa 14 acres at killydoon, Loughduff made €120,000 in two lots; and, finally, 20 acres of land and five acres of unused bog was sold for €165,000. The auctioneer told The Anglo-Celt that the 3.8 acres was bought by a solicitor while the other two farms were bought by local farmers. "There is still quite a lot of interest in land, mainly because there is much less of it being offered for sale now than there would have been in the boom. I'd say the amount of land coming on the market has halved since the recession," according to the auctioneer. "Land is still quite saleable," said Mr. Reilly, who admitted that prices had dropped nonetheless. Future auctions Mr. Reilly has a number of other farms coming up for public auction with the following going under the hammer this week: Portanure, Gowna, Co.
