This has been another busy year for the Cavan Tidy Town committee and they are expecting an improvement in their marks as they bid for a hat-trick of county titles when the results are announced on Monday in Dublin.
The county town received a major overhaul for the All-Ireland Fleadh and the secretary of the TT committee, Eddie Brady, told The Anglo-Celt this week "we will be disappointed if we don't achieve three-in-a-row". Such a record has never been achieved by the town so the committee is eagerly looking forward to Monday's results.
In a competition where additional points awarded are difficult to achieve Mr. Brady is hopeful Cavan will increase theirs significantly. Over the last 12 months the hard working committee have put in a tremendous effort to ensure they retain the county title.
Continuing Mr. Brady said: "A well deserved congratulations and thank you to everyone who contributed and helped out for this year's application and adjudication." To those who gave voluntarily and willingly of their time, equipment, advice and knowledge, the committee would like to thank them most sincerely as without all of this community involvement the committee would not have been able to achieve so much, he added.
He also paid tribute to every household and business in Cavan that took pride in their town by tidying, maintaining and planting around their own homes or premises. "Please keep up the good work." Mr. Brady also praised the excellent work by town clerk Brian Hora, the outdoor staff and the members of the Town Council for their continued support and co-operation.
"The excellent floral displays are down to the horticulturist Bernadette McGovern and her outdoor team." While Cavan maintained its Clean To European Norm title in the latest IBAL results, Mr. Brady was disappointed it was not further up in the league table. "I have never seen the town looking so well and everyone played a major role in that but I was amazed that the down had slipped down the rankings."
He would be somewhat let down if the county town didn't increase it marks again this year. In recent years the town had seen an upward curve in marks and Mr. Brady hopes that trend continues this year. The hard working committee consists of chairman Paddy Conaty, vice-chairperson Madeleine Argue and treasurer Mayjo McGahon.
The Tidy Towns concept has become, in Cavan, a community approach to making Cavan an even more lovely place to live. The mission statement nationally for Tidy Towns is Making Your Place A Better Place, and Mr. Brady believes that ethos had blossomed in Cavan town.
