Heather Humphreys attended cabinet this morning to discuss Brexit.

BREXIT FALLOUT: Minister "very disappointed" at result, cabinet met this morning

Minister Heather Humphreys has today (Friday) said that she is 'very disappointed' that Britain has voted to leave the European Union. Minister Humphreys was speaking following a special Cabinet meeting this morning.

“While I fully respect the decision of the UK electorate, it is of course very disappointing that Britain has voted to leave the EU,' said the Cavan-Monaghan TD. 'The Cabinet met to discuss the implications for Ireland this morning.

'Contingency plans are now being implemented by the Irish Government. I know people in Cavan and Monaghan will be concerned about the impact on the border counties, but it is important to remember that there is no immediate impact to how people go about their daily lives, or to the movement of people and trade.

'Nothing is going to change overnight; Britain’s departure from the EU will be a process that will take at least two years. As the Taoiseach has said, we now have some breathing space, as we decide how to move forward. It is a priority for the Irish Government to maintain the Common Travel Area and to minimise the impact on the flow of people and services between here and the UK.

'Ireland remains committed to the EU, but we must also chart a way forward with the UK. Ireland has a unique relationship with the UK, which has become stronger than ever in recent years. And we have weathered significant challenges in the past; including the break with sterling and Ireland’s decision to join the euro.

'What we need now is to work together, particularly along the border, and to calmly respond to the challenges posed by Britain’s exit. The Minister for Foreign Affairs has said that he will continue to work to support stability, reconciliation and prosperity for the people of Northern Ireland,' she said.
