Garda warning as buyers duped into paying cash for counterfeit goods

Gardaí in Cavan and Monaghan are warning members of the public, particularly in the run up to Christmas, against purchasing goods from unknown sources following several report of incidents where fake or counterfeit goods have exchanged hands.
“Purchasing goods online is very popular these days, especially in the lead up to Christmas. This global market is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years. There is no doubt that cyber criminals are aware of this and will take advantage of whatever situation comes their way.
“The need for caution when purchasing online is now more important than ever. Fraudsters can create fake and professional looking websites to lure in unsuspecting victims,” a local spokesperson said.
Gardaí say that several incidents have now been reported to them, many of which took place across the internet, while others were advertised for sale in trading magazines and media. “A number were also purchased after being offered goods for sale on the public street,” they say, and are urging shoppers to buy from a reliable sources and to support local traders.
Tips for buyers include buying from reputable online dealers, beware of forgeries of big brand named goods at low prices, use credit cards or online payment sites and avoid public WiFi.
“The same precautions should be taken if you are selling an item, whether you advertise online or locally. The transaction should take place in a public area and preferably covered by CCTV.
Always remember 'if it is too good to be true, it probably is’ and 'buyer beware’,” Gardaí say.
