Shannon Gaels clubman Tom Reilly is the new chairman of the Cavan county board following his victory in a three-way election at the county convention last Thursday night in Drumavaddy Hall.

Fifty-year-old Reilly, a long-standing member of the county executive, defeated Kildallan's Packie McKiernan by 95 to 44 in the second round of voting following outgoing PRO Mark Gillick's elimination after the first round.

Gillick exited the race with 38 votes to Reilly's 61, with McKiernan on 40.

Meanwhile, Paddy Reilly (Shercock) had a one-sided win over incumbent John Argue in the election for Youth Board chairman while Mark O'Rourke (Ballyhaise) defeated Killygarry clubman Enda Mulvany 93-46 for the Youth Officer position.

John Cassidy completed a good night for Shannon Gaels by taking the Youth Board secretary position, beating John Emo of Butlersbridge by 81 to 58.

"I want to thank my Club, Shannon Gaels for the help they have given me in this campaign. They are a great Club and great people. They never allow length of miles come between them and representing their Club and supporting their County," stated Reilly, a native of Mayo who has been resident in west Cavan for 30 years,

"I have been involved with that Club since its formation. I know they are proud of my election tonight. I thank them for their great support over the past thirty years. I know I will have their continued support in the years ahead."

Reilly paid tribute to the defeated candidates. In a stirring address, Reilly stated that "change begins now".

"Tonight, after a long meeting and a long and tough campaign I want to spend with my family and Club. The work begins in earnest tomorrow.

I want you all to leave this Hall with one clear message. There must be change, we have begun that change tonight.

"I am determined to fulfil the mandate you have given me here tonight."
