Locals take full advantage of fun in the sun

The sun is out, the lid of 2011's sun tan lotion popped open, the chime of the Ice-Cream van mingles with the noise of children playing, and those foreign holiday brochures put away for what finally seems to be summertime on Irish shores.

With temperatures peaking in the county at mid to high 20-degrees, throngs of people and flocked to local amenity areas and lake shores right across the county.

After the coldest spring for almost six-decades, locals took full advantage of the hot weather and turned out in their droves to places like Annagh, Brackley, Lough Ramor and Lough Sheelin.

In Belturbet, several hundred people turned out for Turbet Live on the town island for a fun-filled family day-out coupled with an eclectic mix of Trad, Brass/Silver band, Male-Voice Choir and Country Bluegrass.

Rackhouse Pilfer headline this year’s Turbet Live event. A high-octane six-piece Bluegrass and American Roots band, they perform their own unique take on songs from Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch, Steve Earl and John Hiatt as well as traditional Bluegrass songs and originals.

With the good weather set to continue, other events throughout the county this weekend are hoping for similarly good attendances, like the Nyah Traditional Music Festival and Free Family Fun Day at Castle Saunderson on Sunday from 4pm, the 10km Ras Spraoi in Cavan Town for all you sporty types (1pm), and 'A Walk in the Woods' at Dartry Forest Park, Shercock at 2.30pm.
