Cavan Community Mental Health team wins healthcare awards

The HSE Cavan Community Mental Health Team recently won two awards at The Irish Healthcare Awards held on March 9 at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dublin.

The first award was received for Mental Health centre of the year 2018. The day hospital at Drumalee, Cavan is a recovery focused service which meets the needs of clients with mental health problems.

It provides a range of evidenced based approaches, offering people the necessary skills to manage individual challenges. The Mental Health centre facilitates medication management clinics, structured social activities programmes and cognitive behavioural therapy courses foAwardsr anxiety and depression.

The second award was for Mental Health Initiative of the Year. This was for their nurse led Cognitive Behavioural Courses for excessive worry for Adults and Young Adults.

Excessive worry causes significant stress to everyday functioning, often becoming a chronic, debilitating, compliant which affects the person, the family and society. These courses provide an opportunity for participants to learn CBT skills to manage their lives in a more productive and helpful way.

Each course runs for two hours once a week over a ten week period. In addition, follow-up booster sessions are offered at one month, three months and six months to review CBT skills and maintain wellness. The feedback received both written and verbal has been very positive.

The Cavan-Monaghan Mental Health Services for the Elderly also had a number of projects that were among the finalists listed in a number of categories of the 2018 Irish Healthcare Awards including:

A project entitled 'Management of Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia' which was a finalist in the category of Health care Initiative - Older Persons Care Services and the category of Healthcare Initiative - Patient Education / Lifestyle Project - Clinic/Specialised Centre.

Tony O'Brien, the Director General HSE, said that the awards plays a valuable role in the organisation: “The Irish healthcare centre awards provide an opportunity for Healthcare centres to showcase their good work to a national audience and be recognised for their achievements, staff excellence and patient care.”
The Clinical Nurse Manager, Nuala Miles, who leads the project expressed the delight at all concerned with the win: “As a team we were delighted to receive these awards. It has had a very positive effect on the team, encouraging us in our daily work and motivating us to continue to improve our services.”
