Residents’ call to keep Town Greenway Litter Free

The Carrickane & District Residents Association (CDRA) and Cavan County Council Waste Management section are asking visitors to the Cavan Town Greenway to bring their litter home and to leave no trace behind them when the leave the popular amenity.

What used to be the old railway line is now a very popular area for cyclists, dog walkers and pedestrians including staff of Cavan General Hospital during their lunch break and is becoming increasingly busy every weekend.

Martin McConnell, CDRA secretary, said that local residents have made great efforts to make the area more attractive and removed fallen leaves, undertaken litter picks and carried out some landscaping works, the fruits of which will be seen next spring and summer.

Unfortunately, the increased footfall has resulted in more litter being discarded along the route including dog fouling. Mr McConnell has urged visitors to the Greenway to be more environmentally aware going into 2021 and to take pride in their local walking and cycling route by bringing their litter home and making it a more special place for the community to enjoy.

Mal Lowry, CDRA chairperson, has also welcomed the road improvement works being undertaken by Cavan County Council including road widening and bridge restoration on the Loreto Road which will ensure the safety of pedestrians along this busy road.
