Garda numbers increase

Almost a quarter more gardaí are serving in counties Cavan and Monaghan, compared to five years ago.

The numbers are contained in an update from the Department for Justice, which revealed that at the end of October 2020 there were 117 members assigned to Cavan District. It represents an increase of over 23% since 2015. As of the same date, there were 102 members assigned to Monaghan District, also up 23% over the same period.

As of October 31, 2020, there were 384 gardaí assigned to the Cavan/Monaghan Division, which represents an increase of almost 21% since 2015.

These Garda members are supported by 54 garda staff, a rise of over 42% in five years. The numbers have been boosted by the assignment of 131 probationer gardaí to the Cavan/Monaghan Division since the reopening of Templemore Garda College in September 2014.

The department states that the allocation of Garda resources is made in light of identified operational demands. This includes deployment of personnel among the various Garda Divisions and planning for policing of specific areas.
