Gaelscoil Bhreifne look to extend

Gaelscoil Bhreifne have applied to Cavan County Council for permission to progress a number of upgrades including new autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) classrooms.

The school has applied to erect a fully serviced single storey extension to the existing school.

The proposed new extension will incorporate two ASD classrooms, one mainstream classroom, a new link corridor, a new office, toilet facilities, boundary treatments, new carparking and a set down area. The plans also cover the relocation of a hard surface play area, alterations to the site layout with a new access via a service road.

Gaelscoil Bhreifne secured a permanent site with a move back in September 2018, almost 25 years after the all-Irish primary school first opened its doors. At that time they moved from the former Jackson’s garage premises on Farnham Street in Cavan Town to reside in what was previously the St Clare’s Convent at Tullacmongan, Cavan.

This latest application was received by the council planners on February 17 with the decision due on April 13.

The growing interest in education through Gaeilge saw the Department of Education and Skills write to Cavan Monaghan ETB last summer to explore the possibility of locating a permanent secondary Gaelscoil within the grounds of the former Dún Uí Néill barracks in Cavan Town.
