Driver stopped at 133km/h in 60km/h zone

A driver was stopped by Gardaí after being detected at 133km/h in a 60km/h zone outside Kingscourt.

Gardaí from the Cavan Roads Policing Unit were carrying out speed checks on the outskirts of the town at the weekend.

A number of drivers were stopped in the 60km/h zone leaving the town. Among them was one travelling at 133km/h, more than twice the limit.

In a post on social media, Gardaí noted the drivers stopped were all leaving Kingscourt town and heading towards an 80km/h.

“The drivers in question were all leaving town and were travelling from the 60km/h into an 80km/h zone. It is clear to see that they were well in excess of the next speed limit, never mind the one they were in.”

Fixed Payments Notices were issued.

Meanwhile, a driver was caught travelling at 143km/h on the N3 by Gardaí carrying out speed checks last week.

Again, the Cavan Roads Policing Unit was conducting speed and safety checks on the busy route, with eight drivers stopped for road offences. These included speeding and overtaking on continuous white lines.

Drivers were clocked at speeds of between 128km/h and 143km/h. That's almost 90mph.

Gardaí have urged drivers to slow down and take care on the country's roads.

The checks followed a similar operation on the N3 in the run up to the August bank holiday when a number of drivers were again caught travelling over the 100km/h speed limit.
