Minister welcomes new SÍOL investment opportunity for Cavan Communities

New programme backed by €31.5 million in funding through to 2030

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan and Minister of State, Niamh Smyth, has warmly welcomed today's announcement of the new SÍOL Programme, which will provide targeted investment in urban areas experiencing the highest levels of disadvantage.

The new programme, unveiled by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, is backed by €31.5 million in funding through to 2030, and will support projects that improve public spaces, enhance community wellbeing and safety, and expand access to education and training opportunities.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Smyth said: "I am delighted that Cavan Town has been selected as one of just 15 locations nationwide to be included in this important new programme. This is a significant opportunity for communities across Cavan Urban, Cavan Rural, Ballyhaise, Clonervy and Moynehall to benefit from targeted investment that can make a real and lasting difference."

The SÍOL Programme, she said, recognises the importance of investing in communities that need additional support and ensuring that people have access to quality public spaces, community facilities, education and training opportunities. "This investment has the potential to strengthen local communities and improve quality of life for residents across the area," noted Minister Smyth who encouraged community organisations and local stakeholders to engage with Cavan County Council, which will be invited to bring forward project proposals under the scheme.

"I would encourage community groups, residents' associations, voluntary organisations and local leaders to begin considering projects that could benefit their areas. While applications will be made through the local authority, local knowledge and community engagement will be key to ensuring that this funding delivers the greatest possible impact."

The SÍOL Programme – Scéim Infheistíochta ag Obair Le Chéile (Working Together Investment Scheme) – will see an initial €5 million allocated in 2026, with successful projects expected to be announced by the Department in late 2026.

Minister Smyth concluded: "I look forward to working with Minister Calleary, Cavan County Council and local communities to maximise this opportunity and ensure that Cavan secures meaningful investment that will benefit local people for years to come."
