Gardaí figures show overall crime down

An Garda Síochána has announced its provisional crime statistics for 2025, showing a significant reduction in most major crimes.

Although there has been a reduction in the worst crimes, Gardaí have seen a rise in fraud offences and public order offences.

Gardaí have seen an increase in proactive policing activities, ranging from thousands of different interventions across the country.

These include:

  • Over 74,000 arrests.
  • Over 134,000 criminal summonses created.
  • Around 6,200 adult cautions were given.
  • Over 13,000 referrals to the Juvenile Diversions programme.

When it comes to the ever-increasing fraud statistics, online fraud is driving this rise.

These include increases in deception, shopping fraud, card fraud, money laundering and forgery offences.

Gardaí also observed a significant rise in accommodation fraud, account takeovers and bogus tradesman frauds.

Along with these statistics, Gardaí have seen an increase in drug-dealing offences, but drugs for personal use have dropped, as they are now focusing on supplies rather than users.

When it comes to road policing, Gardaí have had an increasing presence on the roads over the last few years.

Although there was a 4% increase in the number of cars seized by Gardaí, the number of people caught driving while intoxicated remained similar to 2024, with 8100 drivers arrested.

According to the Central Statistics Office, despite a population increase of 9.3% since 2019, Ireland has seen a 7% reduction in crime during the same period.

The figures show an even further reduction in crime since 2002, with the population growing by 37% since then.
